Karen Wheeler, founder of Be Well Play Well

Karen Wheeler, RN-BC, MGCP, RYT is the primary facilitator of programs offered by BEwell*PLAYwell. For over 30 years she has been helping clients bring balance into their lives and to accomplish their goals. Karen is a nationally certified mental health nurse, a Mental Game Coaching Professional trained by Dr. Patrick Cohen, and a Kripalu Yoga Teacher. She has an extensive background in yoga and sports as well as teaching in traditional medical settings, making her unique in the field of mental game coaching. By merging her skills and knowledge from a mental health background, her athletic experience, and a rich exposure to a wide variety of integrative and complementary modalities, Karen guarantees a truly holistic approach to the classes and sessions by BEwell*PLAYwell.

Karen became a registered nurse in 1968 and worked in a variety of traditional clinical settings. In 1984 she started specializing in the mental health field and became a certified nurse alcoholism counselor. Cognitive restructuring is among the many classes Karen taught in both substance abuse and mental health units. In 1997 she earned national certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. To further enrich her services she utilizes motivational interviewing, the evidence-based approach to overcoming the ambivalence that keeps many people from making changes in their lives.

Karen comes from a family of golf enthusiasts and played competitively at an early age. She co-captained all of her high school's sports teams and was elected "Best All-Around Student." She was inducted into her high school Athletic Hall of Fame, one of 10 women and 28 men recognized over a period of 75 years.

Currently, golf is Karen's favorite sport. She competes successfully in club and state amateur tournaments and plays to a single-digit handicap. She has been the club champion and captain of the women's state golf team of the Concord Country Club in Concord, MA. As a team member of her club's first cup division, with partners and individually, Karen frequently experiences success on the links.

Karen earned sports hypnosis certification with Bob Reese, a prior Jets trainer and recipient of awards for his work incorporating peak performance concepts into NFL sports medicine. To further enhance her mental game skills, Karen trained with Fred Shoemaker, author of Extraordinary Golf–The Art of the Possible.

While working as a registered nurse in California, Karen was strongly influenced by the arrival of the Human Potential Movement. Realizing the importance of focus and attitude, Karen practiced and taught numerous relaxation response techniques including massage, yoga, martial arts, and meditation. Highlights of her holistic background include:

  • Certifications in massage, yoga, hypnosis, sports hypnosis, Breathwalk®, and DansKinetics.
  • An internship at the UMass Medical Center Stress Reduction Clinic under the direction of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn in Worcester, MA. The exposure to mindfulness as a meditative practice and as a way of life contributed to the creation of Engaging Your Wisdom and Power, an 8-week wellness program.

Engaging Your Wisdom and Power

“I'm actually using more positive thoughts and much more aware of how I breathe or should I say don't breathe. Some of my underlying beliefs that have been driving me I think have been driving me down. The fun part—I'm using Breathwalk techniques in my running, going farther and enjoying it more.”

Allan F. of Bedford, MA

Golf and the Mind-Body Connection

“I enjoyed the way you integrated the breathing and stretching into the golf. I especially liked the support in breaking down the distance to attainable goals. I was amazed the ‘ah-ha’ I got when I realized my purpose was mainly to have fun and not competition.”
Susan L. of Leominster, MA

American Holistic Nurses Association

“Thank you so much for leading our holistic nurses meeting. Your talk was outstanding and the practical exercises so practical! I've begun to use the breathing techniques in my daily life. What a difference they make!”

Susan H., RN of Westford, MA

Massage

“Thank you for your help in getting ready for my recent MRI. Your massage and breathing techniques helped me to handle the procedure the way I wanted to, centered and unsedated. That was a gift!”

Kate S. of Chelmsford, MA

Yoga

“Don't stop. I depend on these classes for my sanity! Thanks for your sense of humor; you made class more than just a healthy thing to do.”

Betsy L. of Littleton, MA

“I was pretty surprised how much I liked coming to class. Originally it was from my bad back but now it's fun and my wife tells me I'm easier to be with.”

John D. of Harvard, MA

Nursing

“Our family wishes to extend our profound appreciation for the thoughtful caring service that you have given to our mother. You have been thorough and supportive in your visits. You have been careful to keep us informed of her progress, and you have illuminated possible choices for her care without pressuring us or trying to influence us to make any particular decision. You have kept us aware of our options, and you have waited to learn our choices. We hope that she may experience safety and comfort in her new location, and trust that you will remember that you have been helpful to all of us in achieving that end. We thank you for your excellent care and support.”
